As the evenings draw in, many London homes end up heating every room to keep one or two comfortable. Older radiators, mixed-age extensions and flats with a single wall thermostat make it worse: the hallway where the thermostat sits is warm, so the boiler switches off while the bedroom is still cold. Smart radiator valves and a well-configured thermostat are a practical way to fix that, and they do not need a new boiler or a rebuilt heating system.
This guide explains how room-by-room control works, what to check before you buy, and where a professional installation helps.
Why one thermostat rarely suits a whole home
A single thermostat measures one spot and makes one decision for the entire property. In a typical London terrace or conversion, that means a south-facing living room can be warm by lunchtime while a north-facing bedroom stays chilly, and the heating either overshoots or undershoots.
Room-by-room control changes the question. Each radiator gets its own valve head, and each valve follows its own schedule. The spare room can stay low all week and warm up only when guests arrive, while the home office heats up before you sit down to work.
How smart radiator valves work
A smart thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) replaces the manual dial on a radiator. It opens and closes the valve based on the temperature you want in that room and the schedule you set in an app. The main thermostat then calls for heat from the boiler only when at least one room needs it.
In practice, the benefits are simple:
- Rooms you rarely use are not heated to the same level as the ones you live in.
- Schedules follow your routine, such as earlier mornings in the bedrooms and evenings in the lounge.
- You can adjust everything from your phone or by voice, which is handy if you are away or running late.
Our Heating Zones package covers exactly this: a thermostat plus up to six smart radiator valves, fitted and tuned, with per-room schedules and app and voice control set up. It is Heating Zones: £449 inc. VAT. The hardware is customer-supplied or quoted, so you can bring a system you have already chosen or ask us to quote the hardware separately.
Just want to upgrade the thermostat?
If your radiators already work well and the main frustration is a clunky timer, a smart thermostat on its own can be enough. Smart Thermostat Setup: £179 inc. VAT covers fitting a customer-supplied thermostat, configuring schedules and the app, and setting up geofencing and away modes. It works with all major brands, including Hive, Nest and tado.
Geofencing is useful for households with irregular hours: the system can drop to an away mode when everyone has left and bring the house back up as you return. It is worth setting up properly rather than leaving it on factory defaults, because the schedule you start with is rarely the one you actually need.
Seeing where the energy goes
Controlling heat is one half of the picture. The other is knowing what you use. Energy Insight: £299 inc. VAT installs a whole-home energy monitor with a CT clamp, live dashboards on your phone, usage alerts and cost tracking, and automation rules configured for you. For households trying to understand a winter bill, being able to see consumption by the hour makes it far easier to judge whether a schedule change is working.

Practical checks before you start
A few questions save time and money on the day:
- What heating do you have? Most smart TRVs suit standard wet radiator systems with a boiler. Underfloor heating, electric panel heaters and some communal flat systems need a different approach, so mention them when you get in touch.
- How many radiators do you want to control? Heating Zones covers up to six valves. A larger home may need more, which would be quoted accordingly.
- Which app or voice assistant do you use? Choose a system that matches the phones and speakers already in the house, and say if you want Alexa or Siri involved.
- Is the wider smart home in view? If you are planning lighting, blinds or security as well, it helps to choose heating that will sit alongside them. Our smart home automation packages are built around one app.
Getting it set up properly
The difference between a smart heating system that quietly works and one that gets switched back to manual is almost always in the set-up: sensible room temperatures, schedules that match real routines, and valves that are paired and tested room by room. That is the part we do on site, and we leave you with the app configured so it makes sense from day one.
If you are unsure which route suits your home, tell us what you have, how many rooms matter, and whether you already own any equipment. We will point you towards the sensible option rather than the biggest one. All prices above are inc. VAT.
